I'm in the camp that says stitch up the holes nice (so the rain don't get in... 
) and wear with pride. There's definitely something to be said for the idea of a fedora that you don't end up feeling too precious about to really wear it with the unconciously utilitarian attitude to it that they must have had back in the day. Wear it like a pair of favourite old jeans!
