hi. if this fsn(im not even sure if fsn is right,federal stock number?nsn-national stock number?)8415-268-7800 is on the tag of a g-1 jacket,does that mean that jacket is made of goatskin? tia for any info. stephen

No such animal as fsn but there is a NSN national stock number. Flight clothing in particular will start with 8415-**-**x-**xx or the older nsn 8415-**x-**xx. 8415 being the stock class (clothing) and the three digit being the item (jacket flyers) and the four digit being the size class.

I used to know this stuff better than I remember it now, but it seems to me that all of the G-1s prior to sometime in the 70s were made of goat. The hides were of better quality in the C series, and then declined. I have a mid 60s G-1 that is goat; my current issue G-1 is cow that is stamped to look like goat. Still a well made jacket. Seems like the tag is DSCP on the current issue. The vintage tag is black with gold letters, as I remember. There are some G-1 experts on here who can answer any question you have if they see the thread.

the eleven digit stock number suggests a late 60s or early to mid 70s jacket. I think the early 70's G-1 were cowhide/steerhide.

If the jacket was made after the late fifties, it can best be dated by the tag's DA, DSA, DLA or SPO number. For example, the first tag below shows that its G-1 was made in 1971. The second shows a manufacture date of 1992.

G-1s up through the D-series were all goat. Beginning with the E-series jackets, both goat and stamped cow hide were used.
