Fur Felt Fedora under $100?

I'm looking into getting my first (properly fitting) fur-felt hat this coming winter, and was wondering if it would still be feasible to get it in the under-$100 range? Around the time I first joined the Lounge I seem to recall talk of currency rates making it possible to pick up an Akubra in the $70-$90 range; if my memory serves me right, is this still a possibility? If so, where? (Actually, any reputable hat under $100 would suit me well; it doesn't necessarily need to be an Akubra). Any and all links would be much appreciated.

All of my Akubras were purchased for under $100 even with shipping. I am sure you can find some fur felt hats on clearance for under that price. I've bought & seen purchased, a good many vintage Resistols off eBay for less that $60. Somebody just beat me out of a nice OR style Resistol in a 7 5/8 for about $40 plus shipping.

Akubra & several other brands have hats that are close to the $100 mark, if not under it. Here are several dealers whose websites I check with some regularity.

Hats Direct: http://www.hatsdirect.com/

Everything Australian: http://everythingaustralian.com.au/

David Morgan: http://www.davidmorgan.com/index.php

Others:
Village Hat Shop: http://www.villagehatshop.com/
(a few Jaxons come in at under $100)

Hats Plus: http://www.hats-plus.com/default.aspx
(check out the "On Sale" tab on the upper right)

Don't forget about the Classifieds here at the Lounge, either.

You know you're spoiled you lot. Dontcha?!

Your average felt Akubra retails for around AUS$125 in the land of their birth.

By comparison you almost ARE the land of the free!

@ MisterGrey -- Glad we could help. Enjoy the hunt.

@ Ephraim Tutt -- I don't know about anyone else, but I kind of like it that way! Seriously, though, Akubra prices dropped pretty hard last year & Lounge members made a run on Akubra hats. If you look at the Akubra Overload and Akubra Campdraft threads, you'll notice that lots and lots of Loungers got new Akubras last year.

Edited to add: . . . myself included.

Yep Spats, and I can't blame you for that. The little Aussie dollar disappeared through the floorboards last year even though our economy is not the basket case of its US counterpart. Economics is lost on me.

But it meant you got some great Aussie hats for a song! There's always a silver lining...

...and a brown one....a moonstone one.....

So that's why my stylemaster took so long to get to me early this year!

I imagine with the $1US:$1.24 exchange rate, that run has declined but they were good value when you could get them.

Most definitely there for a short while. I bought 3 Campdrafts that averaged out to $74/hat shipping included. Truly an opportunist that hopefully infused some cash into the Aussie economy. [huh]

I saw that one, too. For once, I'm able to enter a plea of "not guilty".lol

@ munchausen -- Yeah, that might help 'splain it. I got 2 Stylemasters while the prices were low, one in Mid-brown and one in Mid-grey. I also seem to recall several other Lounge members saying they'd bought Stylemasters.

@ Ephraim Tutt -- Prices on Stylemasters dropped even further after I bought mine, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't get a great deal on them.

Gt & Spats - it's almost an incentive to encourage your powers-that-be to keep on wrecking the world's economy!

I say it with love of course :)

And thanks for contributing to our economic well-being. Wear those hats with pride!

The Stetson Chatham is also not a bad buy.
Agreed, although be aware that it is a heavy felt. Good in winter but in summer it can sometimes be too hot when compared to a normal fur felt.

Try the Susquehana Hat Co on www.johnhalifax.co.uk as their fur felts are well under $100 and their quality appears to be very good though I have to see how my new one lasts in rain (it does claim to be waterproofed). The website is currently down but when I spoke to the proprietor Mr Halifax he said he was in the process of fixing it.
