The Poirier’s Diner, Providence, Rhode Island about three miles from my office. Later operated under names such as El Faro, Arnold’s Diner and the Top Hat Diner on Atwells Avenue. Moved to Westminster Street and restored (now the West Side Diner)

FREE if moved! “A castle-shaped 1930s-era portable metal diner that years ago was home to a Wichita burger stand on East Douglas but that has been hidden on a rural property in Butler County for decades could find new life if moved.

This building was constructed by Ablah Hotel Supply sometime between 1934-1935. Ablah was based out of Wichita, KS; they built these pre-fab diners in the late '20s through mid to late 1930s. With the help of a few historical diner experts, it was determined that the building was most likely either the former Little Palace Lunch No. 1 from 3037 E. Douglas or the Continental Grill No. 2 from 3012 E. Douglas. This is the only definite Ablah Hotel Supply castle-shaped diner survivor and is in remarkable shape. It's an important building both from an architectural and a roadside Americana standpoint.

It’s steel framed with riveting and approximately 20' x 20' — the building was originally moved to the current location using a crane; it would take some significant logistics and money to move off of the property. Cool as that is, I have difficulty envisioning how economically sensible it would be to move it more than a few miles.

Still, I hope somebody saves it.

I just now looked up what has become of the free diner in Wichita. No updates since early February.

This is a painting, not a photograph. It’s by the late Ralph Goings, a “name” among the photorealists. His technique was to project a photo image onto a canvas or paper and work from there. The results are sometimes called “hyper realism,” it being more real than real. I‘ve been a fan of this “school” since I was first exposed to it, in the early 1970s.
