According to John, it was made from seal brown Shinki horsehide that becomes lighter with wear. After nearly fifteen years, the leather has developed a beautiful range of brown tones. It is now very soft and comfortable, while still retaining the dense feel of horsehide.
The jacket has a simple Californian sports-jacket design, with a zippered chest pocket, slanted handwarmer pockets, cuff straps, and an adjustable half belt. The lining appears to be cupro or rayon and feels exceptionally smooth.
Personally, this is one of the best-fitting jackets in my collection. It has enough room through the shoulders and chest without any unnecessary excess, while the waist remains clean and well shaped. It also looks good worn open, although I think the pattern is shown at its best when fully zipped.
The understated design, aged brown Shinki, and excellent fit make it one of my favorite Good Wears. More of my collection can be seen on Instagram: @derrick_leather.
