This is a 1-71 two stroke GM diesel generator. Charles Kettering - the genious GM head engineer who came up with so many things we take for granted ( the electric starter, braker point ingiton etc etc...) designed the two stroke GM diesels in the '30s. They powered most of the diesel locomotive revolution, most of the busses we grew up riding etc. etc. There should be a special holiday for Kettering. His designs have changed the world and helped make the USA the leader it was....

GM diesels use a Roots blower to blow the exhast out and fresh air in at the bottom of each stroke....

Kettering invented that first practical self starter for the 1912 Cadillac. Apparently he used experience gained in motorizing cash registers from his previous employer National Cash Register.
