Hello All,
I came by a Penny's Marathon fedora on EBAY. It was advertised as "Ugly Hat" so I was able to pick it up for about $26. When I got the hat I realized the downside of "truth in advertising." The hat was truly ugly.
The hat came with a bound brim, done in an almost Homburg style. Snapping the brim down in front caused the brim to fold under three quarters of the way back, making the hat look unbalanced. The ribbon was some sort of "sharks gill" affair, which was poorly executed and very faded. The sweatband fell apart when I touched it.

In stage one, I've stripped the hat down to the felt and ironed the curl out of the brim. The felt is in sound condition, but you can see how much it has faded. The dark ring on the brim is the area that was under the brim binding.
The hat now looks like a very conventional fedora, with an about 2 1/4 inch brim. The next stage is going to be dying the felt back to its original color, or as close to it as I can get...
I will try to keep you all posted. By the way...anyone have any idea how old this hat is?
