Headline threw me for a minute - I was looking for top hats in the pictures! (Clearly I've absorbed a lot of the Anglo dialect living in England these many years, even if I haven't exactly gone native!)

It also amuses me no end that they chose to suggest that the perp was "attractive looking". But hey, fair enough, really - it's a very common sort of comment in relation to female-presenting perpetrators, so why not for the boys too. :)

Well, the Post is Murdoch-owned, so if toppers is catchy, it stays in the lede. For us Yanks, the Fouquet mention gives it away.

What I think of old Rupe isn't for this site, but all credit to the man he always had a nose for how to sell a story, it's why he's got to the top.

Fouquet does rustle a half forgotten wire in the back of my head - was he the guy that did aged-looking hats with the matchstick in the band?

Think they are up on eBay yet? If so, selling at a discount.

I doubt that anyone in California could take the process from a dead nutria to a hat, or a blank. Preparing the hair and felting is much more difficult and involved than just forming a hat and sticking a ribbon on it.
