The critic seems to think there was sartorial homogenization in the 1930s and ‘40s. Humans, and in particular those pesky Americans, have always had a strong individualists tendency. Yes, there was more conformity then than now, but to claim “no one” wore their hats that way??

I'm not sure I'd pay much mind to a critic that thinks that Hollywood movies from the thirties are an irrefutable documentary on "what everyone wore" in the 1930s. I'm having flashbacks here to the scene in Back to the Future III when Marty arrives in the real Old West dressed by Doc Brown's 1950s self per Hollywood Western movies...
