Can you stretch and reblock this for me Art? If not for me, maybe you can get it big enough for JP.

David,

Art is a hatter not a Metallurgist. LOL LOL
It sure would be interesting to have one of these in my size though. Do you think you could put a ribbon on it for me and a mock bound edge in matching ribbon? LOL LOL
Find one in my size David.
I just got my bowler yesterday and I can tell you that this one probably wouldn't be any less stiff. LOL

Regards to all,

J

Hey boys! David, you have found something that is very unique! This is no way a hat stretcher as we all know. Or, a doggie dish for that matter. (No offence Art) It was used by the Big Bands! You know how they would make that ooowah sound? They would just put the hat over the bell of a trombone or trumpet and move it around to change the sound

Here is a photo of Glenn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s band with their hard hats at the Caf?ɬ© Rouge of the Hotel Pennsylvania New York City.

Actually, you are close. Those things that trumpets and trombones but over their bells to make that sound are called "Derby Mutes", for the obvious reason that they look like derbys. This was actually developed/invented by Miller. He was looking for a soft, wah-wah sound and an easy way to manipulate it (go from open to muted quickly), and used his hat. He eventually had these mutes custom made for his band, and thus a new sound in big band music was created.

Well, I didn't know the technical name but I knew what they are;)

I was at a vintage clothing expo once and saw a Derby Mute. The man that was selling it told me that I was the first guy to know what it was besides him. He was so surprised that a young man like my self would know of this. Not to mention what a big band was.:D

So you say Miller was the first to use these? Interesting! Glenn really was a pioneer in the big band sound! Most bands tried to copy his style.

Regards.
