I know I saw a post on this and I can't seem to locate it now...\

Guess my searching skills are not very good...

What do you do when you receive a vintage hat?

Ok, I know the obvious about giving it a good brushing but about moths etc.

I wouldn't want to introduce this hat into my collection and have issues with all my hats.....

Thanks for any tips in advance.....

My newbie response.. After checking for critters, I try it on and verify it fits. :)

Actually, I'm with you, having won a couple hats, I also am learning about cleaning tips, products, etc.. My Dunlap looks like it has many good years in it, but I think it could look better after seeing a few before/after pic's in here. Maybe just a good cleaning. But other than brushing, I'm not to keen on best-practice felt cleaning. Nor do I have a block to reblock the hat which I'd love to do. Even considering sending to Optimo if I can decide if the hat's worth it.

Wait I just reread you post... You can acquire moths that are in a hat and introduce them to your other hats? That's scary. There's a good moth thread in here... http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=24635 Nevermind, I see you found that one. sorry.

That's a good question. If it doesn't need re-blocking, I do the following - this is based on what others have recommended here:

1. Brush it good, counter-clockwise
2. Lexol the sweatband before lifting it, and get the connecting threads and surrounding leather good. Careful not to get on felt.
3. Lift the sweatband.
4. Spray alcohol (I have a misting bottle) on the liner and the area where the sweatband connects (underside). Or if nasty, remove liner and soak in woolite solution
5. If needed (evidence of mildew, spots, etc), clean the connecting plastic stuff where the sweatband attaches.
6. Lexol the underside of the sweatband if there's indication of mildew
7. Let dry
