Help with custom Aero Jacket sizing and cxl Horsehide vs Steerhide?

I ordered my Aero Cafe from Bison Trading. They are a Canadian company so you the duty is in the price. Who knows what you would pay if you went through Thurston with the current tariffs. I got some Aerostich gloves from the states ,made in the states, and by the time they came up here were almost double the price. If I get another Aero I’ll get it posted to my relatives in Fife.

Was considering tartan lining, but now looking hard at cotton drill. Olive would be a great color for brown or cordovan. If I went with black cxl, I’d probably go with the cotton tartan. Will likely do cotton sateen for sleeve linings.

I ended up going with black cotton drill and sateen for the sleeves on black cxl steerhide now its just a waiting game until it is made and ready to be shipped

I recently purchased a used aero cafe racer size 36 that I absolutely love but sadly it just doesn't fit as I'd like especially length wise (if someone is interested in getting this beauty it's for sale, feel free to message me) I decided to go the custom route and want your opinions on sizing to ask for and leather choice. (aware that high rise jeans might make it look better but 99% of the time I wear the jacket with untuck t shirt and opened up so prefer the jacket to be longer)

The one I got is cxl fqhh and I love the patina and would like my custom one to be as close as possible after it patina and heard cxl steerhide is pretty much the same but breaks in faster and more comfortable. what I really like about the fqhh is that even after being broken in and patina there's not too much graining its still pretty smooth, is the steerhide the same in that regard or more grainy than the fqhh? and should I go the tumbled option or does that add a lot of grain?

the jacket in the pictures measurements
pit to pit - 53.5 cm / 21 inch
shoulders - 44.5 cm / 17.5 inch
hem - 45 cm / 17.7 inch
back length - 60.5 cm / 23.8 inch
sleeve - 59 cm / 23.2 inch

how much do you recommend I add to the jacket back length and front drop (pictured jacket has minimal front drop maybe 0.5 inch) so it'll be just under the belt (belt is 1.5 inch) and how much to the sleeves so after breaking in it'll drop an inch more than what it currently does on this jacket.
should I increase the shoulders a bit to 18 inch? the shoulders seem ok but a tiny bit tight.
how much should I add to hem and pit to pit if any?

does it matter if I ask the custom aero to be based on size 36 or 38? on this 36 I really like how the sleeves are close fitting to my forearm and wrists.

lastly I'm in Canada do you recommend I go through aero directly or thurston bros?

Honestly I’d keep it simple - get the length right and stick with FQHH + cotton drill. That combo ages really well and you already know you like how it looks.

I’ve ordered two Aero jackets, one from Thurston and one directly. Here are my experiences:

With Thurston: You have Carrie who will walk you through the whole process. She sent me sample leathers so I could compare the texture, color, weight, etc. Since I was ordering an ANJ-4 she was great about the extra length needed due to the fleece raising the jacket by an inch, so we added about one inch to the length and sleeves. Unfortunately there was a problem with the collar (the fastener tab was done wrong) so they rebuilt the jacket and Carrie took care of the whole process.

The second jacket is a B-3 and I contacted Aero directly. I worked with Holly and after a ton of email discussing the specs, the jacket was ordered. It was considerably cheaper than Thurston, even though I had to pay duties (before the tariff mess). Aero cut the sleeves too short, sorry, they cut them to their tolerances, and they have like 1/2 inch of wiggle room. Well, they initially set the measurement slightly short, and with the tolerances, it ended up being in the short side. I sent the jacket back to Aero and they remade it. Shame because the first jacket’s leather was outstandingly amazing, the second one not as spectacular.

My advice for somebody ordering directly from Aero or Thurston, document all the measurements that you agreed with them, preferably with pictures. If they recommend a value and you disagree (on paper) then it will be harder for you to provide justification If something doesn’t fit right. Basically, You’re on your own.

Thanks for the advice! @Tom71 @TartuWolf @MrProper @RDS @newtojackets my next thing to decide is the lining do you have advice on lining for this type of jacket what would be your top 2 lining from aero? and if anyone have worn both type of leather to breaking in point how do they scale on comfort level from 1-10?
I think that Aero Goat is an often overlooked option, I was somewhat skeptical at first, I did a new Cafe Racer in Black Goat in Cotton Drill, really a stunning Jacket, the Black Goat is very pliable and it is beautiful, plus we all know how strong it is, I am very happy with it. I believe it is very underated.

If you wouldn’t mind posting a few pics of that jacket so I might be tempted and possibly get a divorce?
