In interviews, Tom Wolfe explains that when he moved to New York City, he was wearing a white suit from his native South. New Yorkers reacted rather badly to this -- white suits weren't "race race" enough for them -- so Wolfe decided to wear the garb on a daily basis, just to annoy them. He never stopped doing either.
