I was wondering what is the maximum size brim you can have on your hat for it to still be considered a fedora. 3"? 31/2"? After that is it just a cowboy hat?

Behind the 8 ball,..
Good question.

It seems to be a matter of relative proportions,... a ratio of (H) head size divided by (C) crown height plus (B) brim width? [huh]
Is there a formula for this? Or is it all just intuitive?
A 3 inch brim seems to be the absolute limit, (from my observations anyway) given the largest average head size as say,.....7 3/4? After that we go beyond zoot and into western? Hard to define really. lol

I've seen some fedoras that had brims over 3 inches -- they make me look like I'm in Phantom of the Opera or Van Helsing.

If it is over 3", I consider the hat closer in style to an Aussie or a safari hat.

I've seen shorter brimmed cowboy hats. it depends on the styling.
