Indeed...

A brave man's cave should easily hold 30 or forty generations of bones and charcoal and hats and whatnot...

I've lost count. Somewhere around 20.

My first and favorite was an all-beaver from an unknown maker.

Plus:

Top hat:
Anonymous plush silk top hat
(Looking to replace an old beaver top hat)

Bowler:
Frank and Schoble bowler
Beaver Brand crushable bowler
Christy's Bowler

Boater:
From some haberdasher in San Francisco

Tweed:
Harris tweed from Dobbs
Some random brown tweed that I wear in the rain because it never loses its shape (or maybe it already lost it when I got it)

Fedoras:
1 Royal Stetson deluxe
3 Nice fedoras from unknown makers
8 Dobbs fedoras of various styles I acquired in a lot of about a dozen (some of which I gave away)
One cheap wool black fedora I mysteriously acquired

---

And I'm just getting started.

34 all together, I used to keep this gallery in my signature but it's been awhile.

Some have prices in the description, those are listed in the classified section.

AND NOW, for the other end of the spectrum. My collection:

2, both fedoras. A stingy, 60s, black Resistol, and a Borsa Olive. But I'm working on it, I'm working on it! lol

Just keep the excuses straight

First you need an understanding wife.

Then you need to remember all the honey-dos that keep her understanding.

Then you separate out the "hat collection," from the "other hobbies."

If you are into living history, for example, you need ... NEED ... those campaign hats, or tricorns, or toppers, or World War II helmets, etc.

So they don't really "count" as part of the hat collection.

Creative financing is also a must, since all of these hobbies ... let's face it, they are compulsions ... are getting pricier every day.

Which brings us back to rule number one.

This thread makes me feel like a traitor to the FL

Only counting hats which fit:
1 grey deerstalker
1 carribou Stetson Chatham
1 light blue-grey Susquehana Hat Co fedora (modern)

When money permits it (in order of priority):
1 moonstone grey Federation (hopefully to be ordered within the next month)
1 blue smoke VS fedora
1 black homburg
1 folding opera top hat

I hope the bartenders don't throw me out for not owning enough hats to be a proper FL member.

I'm constantly battling to keep my collection to a minimum. I only keep hats I actually "need." The trouble is I can come up with a seemingly endless list of reasons why I need another hat. Just ask me. I can justify every single purchase. But I'm not addicted! I can stop any time.

I'm new to the fur felts, but have collecting for about half a year the cloth ones. I have:

1 cloth oilskin stingy brim from Hills of New Zealand
2 cloth Tilley's- A Hemp Summer, and a Wool Winter
1 Felt Tilley
1 vintage straw Borsalino
1 vintage felt Borsalino (Awaiting arrival)
1 vintage felt Stetson
An Irish Flat Cap (pending)
A soon to be ordered VS
A Bangora Straw Resistol (Not my size, my grandfather bought it before he passed away)
A wool felt derby and top hat from Planar-Merino (out of my size, same origins as above)
20+ Ball caps I've collected for no reason over the years, including two leather ones and a down feather.
1 fedora (pending) most likely to be purchased in New York during my upcoming vacation there.

So, for those of you following along at home, that's 6 in rotation, 4 that are pending, 3 that don't count, and however many ball caps I prefer not to audit. I've caught the bug.

Not huge, but more than I "need:"

4 Art Fawcett
2 Optimo
4 Akubra (Fed III, Sydney, Campdraft, DM Adventurer)
1 Borsalino
1 Stetson Stratoliner
1 Dobbs 20
1 Lee (from Johnny Phi)
1 Wormser Texan
3 Panamas from Panama Bob

So 18 all told. I'm thinking of selling the Akubras and the Lee. I don't wear them very often.
