how many jackets are too many jacket

I currently own 10 original Irvins and 17 original A2s, three B-3s (two original and one ELC redskin),two G-1s, two repro A2s, a B-10 and an ELC 1944 Devon Fleece Irvin. In addition I have various RAF and USAAF cloth uniforms.

Not being a collector and living in a warmer climate, I think I would be fine with only two or three jackets. One brown, one black, and possibly a tan, all in slightly different styles.

I want all of my leather jackets to be "signature" pieces, meaning completely broken in from continuous usage and fitting like gloves. And "signature" also meaning that anyone knowing me would recognize me from a distance by one of the jackets alone because I am usually always seen wearing one. I don't think either scenario is possible with 5-10+ jackets. There just simply isn't enough time to completely break that many in!

Well maybe 15 or so peacoats and 8 or 9 leather jackets, mostly moto jackets. (My wife was looking over my shoulder as I typed that first line.)

[Edit Note: And several nylon flight jackets from my military days--forgot about those as it has been so long ago.]

I feel like an under achiever only twenty or so flight jackets. Not counting field jackets, parkas etc.

It's a pretty situational or even subjective question. If one is a collector of vintage or historical flight/motorcycle/etc. jackets having an ever growing inventory is the point. It seems to me that as long as ones drive to acquire doesn't progress to pathological hording or obsessive spending past ones means that there is no such thing as to many.

What does strike me as odd, however, is people who "collect" new leather jackets. I've definitely noticed on these boards that there are those who seem to own dozens and dozens of Aeros, Eastmans, Lost Worlds, etc. What I always wonder is how can a person really enjoy that many jackets? I own one high quality reproduction A-2, which I've had several years and it's only now starting to be broken. I guess I just don't see the point of having more leathers jackets, which are meant for daily wear, than one can actually wear regularly...

...it seems I have somewhat contradictory opinions!

They aren't nearly identical. The E series MA-1s have pocket flaps that the D series jackets lack.

I thought I had it bad. I see I am not alone here. I personally collect vintage motorcycle, military, and rare jackets that are hardly seen today. I tried not to buy the same jacket. Notice the word try!

Or perhaps someday a private militia will need to be assembled, and they'll be warm in the winter.

HA!! This is good. You guys are making me feel better about having what I've got clogging up the closets around here.

Jeez, I've got over a dozen leathers of different types, over twenty sport coats/blazers (a dozen of those are tweeds), two peacoats, three overcoats, two raincoats, one trenchcoat, and several wools and windbreakers.

I have a lot of jackets and overcoats (don't have a count right now, some are packed away back home right now), but they're all different. I wouldn't want more than one of any type of coat, I prefer variety. I don't need two black chesterfields. A black one and a charcoal gray one, now that's a different story.

I guess it's like collecting anything.
People don't buy them to wear, just collect.
Sure it seems pointless, but to each his own.
In principle, though, I agree with you.
I own 1 Aero Highwayman (brown) and 1 Vanson Enfield (black).
So I have the 2 basic colors covered.
I also have 1 vintage peacoat that I got for $50 on eBay, 1 Lewis Creek waxed cotton coat (also cheap from eBay),
a hooded LL Bean jacket, and finally, a really nice Ibex boiled wool jacket in the coolest color (burnt orange).
That's it.
