Hello again everyone, it has been a long summer and i've neglected to keep up with posting, but with winter arriving I can finally break out my favorite outfits again and get back in the loop :).

I first came here looking for a good first hat and was directed to the Federation, which I am very pleased with, it really seems to compliment the outfit I bought it for. My next buy for myself will most likely be a grey fedora to match a pinstripe suit, which I have also yet to get, but might around the holidays.

The advice I need is for my father however; his birthday is in November and I was thinking of getting him a nice hat he can wear on a casual occasion but also while fishing (he's getting a boat next year and it would be a nice thing for him to have).

I was thinking about the Akubra Tablelands, as my Federation really seems to stand up to weather and I think he'll like the design. I haven't seen it in any other color besides the Olive though, and was wondering what the others look like. I was also considering the Akubra Lawson.

Does anyone have any good ideas on such a hat? He doesn't like very wide brims, prefering medium ones.. I think he likes a bound edge, and would rather have a leather band or something rather than a ribbon (he thinks they are dressy). Brown or Tan I was thinking color wise, but Olive might not be bad, i'd have to see it if anyone has any pics.

Looking forward to any suggestions :) thanks again for the help last year on my first hat, I can't help but want to buy another, and another.. they're addictive!

I think the only problem with those two choices would be ... what does he consider a "medium" brim?
One of them had about a 3 inch brim and the other slightly larger than 3; which most would consider pretty wide ...

You might look at the Banjo Paterson, similar style but smaller brim. And on Noggintops it looks like they'll cut it down even further for you. Just a thought

Consider the Akubra Longreach - it only has a 2.75" brim. It's very similar to the Stockman (see my avatar pic), but it has a bound edge, and a different style of leather band.

The longreach doesn't look bad, but I don't think he'd like the sides turned up, he doesn't like the cowboy look so much. He liked the banjo patterson a bit when I showed it to him last year, so that is another consideration. Brim wise, he felt that my Federation's brim was wide, which is 2 3/4 I believe, but a dimensional cut. It's a tough choice! But at least I have an idea of what he likes.

I don't think the brims on any of Akubra's country hats are much smaller than the Federation (73x70mm), but I will say that my Stockman (70mm), definitely feels smaller on my head than the my Fed does!

You might also consider the Leisure Time - style-wise, it's essentially similar to the Banjo Patterson, but costs a bit less.

These hats are guaranteed for life and if lost within two-years you can get another for half price. Also, they float and have wind straps and other great features for sun protection etc.

As far as I know, only Niggintops offers the banjo. It seems to be the same hat but made with imperial felt rather then heritage felt. The difference as stated on the sales card.

Congratulations, you have just purchased a hat form the "the heritage collection", the finest quality we produce.
At akubra we are proud to produce this high quality range of hats that will appeal to the connoisseurs.
these hats are made from a mixture of top quality, hand selected furs which enables us to produce hats that have to endure 25% more felting and shrinking in our unique manufacturing process.
the final result produces a hat with a great deal more durability and a most pleasant and satisfying touch.
added to this are the genuine, high class, expensive trimmings of the band, lining and sheep leather inner band.
at akubra, we take great pride in the materials, workmanship, fine styling and quality of out hats.
we hope you enjoy your new akubra.

So as you can see the Heritage is higher quality felt.

I suggest the Campdraft. A little wider brim but a great city or country look.
