Ladies Summer Hats

I don't know if you have any good vintage stores around where you live, but that is another great place to find a hat...it is also a good opportunity to see what hat best fits you...a good straw hat would be perfect in the summer

If it's a daytime flapper dress (no beads or fringe; think linen or crepe-de-chine silk), the cloche hat is her best bet. (Do a Google or eBay search on "cloche hats".) These hats show up on eBay fairly regularly, and new versions are all over the Internet.

If it's an evening flapper dress (beads or fringe), no hat is necessary. She could try a headdress, perhaps a beaded skullcap; but vintage originals are hard to find and expensive, and reproductions often look tacky.

Ditto. And if you're not adverse to a new one, ADS Hats in SF has some *wonderful* straw cloches (or at least did last summer when I went in to check. Have a website too.

I have a great summer straw, the label is "Eric Faber"--don't know anything about it; I bought it at a vintage/consignment store and it has lasted me 9 years so far and still looks new!

Wow, thanks for all your beautiful suggestions! There was a grey slouch fedora in Marc's ebay link that was magnificent. The veil would be nice for camoflaging those dark circles I get after too many late nights in a row, or bad allergies.

I'll probably get one of the Tilley hats I saw for casual wear. Since I work around the yard and make repairs to my house, the hat will have to take a little wear and tear. I don't want to mess up a nice vintage hat. But I'll buy something nicer as well.

I think I'll just have to do as Mysterygal suggests and visit Antique Row and try on the hats. Heck, I pass Antique Row every day.

Last month I realized I needed a warmer winter hat: I was stuck out in the cold (long story) and ended up having a relapse of the month-long illness I'd just gotten over. Bummer--but at least it inspired me to get a cute new hat!

you won't be sorry going to the vintage stores, I got a couple of hats for around $30, which, to me, wasn't that bad of a price, they're super cute and in great shape...what I also like about vintage stores is that they have lots of mirrors handy to try on different hats so you can see which one's you like better on you, which is a huge plus if you're just getting into this sort of thing!

I've got a lady's Gimbel Brothers Panama from the '30s that my wife doesn't wear. Take a look and let me know if you're interested. It's in great shape, with a very reasonable price. I was going to ebay it, but better displayed on the fine form of a Lounge member.

My sister got a Akubra CEO in Grey that looks pretty sharp on a woman. the Akubra Safari is also a nice choice. My mother has a Tilley T6 but they also have the TH8 that is a nice woman's hat.

Sun Precautions

A friend who has ultra-sensitive skin told me about this site, they offer a line of clothing and hats that protect from ultra-violet rays.

Their fabric is called Solumbra, it is also feature on their hats, even on their straws. They seem deadly serious about sun protection.

They also have some neat hats. My friend got one called the ultra straw hat and she is quite happy with it.
