Layers with leather jacket

I work at office, usually wear a white shirt, trouser and leather jacket.
Sometimes when it's colder I need to wear another jacket inside. I don't want the inside jacket to be longer than the outside so I want to find an inner jacket that is shorter than the leather jacket, should have a zip, felt or wool…
Does anyone know of a company that makes short jackets like that, I don't want them longer than my leather jackets.

You should probably be looking at vests or cardigans, but having a leather jacket with a removable warm lining would also be a good choice instead of having to wear 2 different jackets together.

I would go at a thin merino-sweater with a full zip. They are usually designed to fit relatively trim and sit at the waist. Plenty of companies with offerings in muted colours without any logos.

For me, "Joe Merino" from Amsterdam is the go do. more than 30 colours, different pullover, jacket, cardigan, vest styles and really, really affordable prices.
If you are not in Europe, I am sure there are other options ("Icebreaker" comes to mind, and they do hae some "non-hiking" styles as well).

Depending from jacket. If something like J-100 you can easily wear even overcoat. If like a A-2 was classical wool sweater with front zipper.

I can't find any shorter than my Buco j24 jacket.

Why does it have to be shorter?
I always wear my jackets with jumpers that are visible below the hem and i don't think it's a terrible faux pas...

I admit that having 4" inches of white T-shirt skirt poking below the hem is not a great look, but i have never felt like the ribbing of a jumper being visible looked bad.

IMO you are overthinking this...

That seems compltely pointless to me. Lofty / insulating layering outside and non-insulating but weather resistant layer underneath? Leather jackets are already completely impractical expect for some use cases (motorcycling), and then you remove the only real benefit they have - looking cool.

Increase your leather jacket wear by wearing them indoors during winter time? Then you just have to wear a warm coat over it. All good. Moar jacket wear time.

Leather are not waterproof not really insulated. This way typical used vest or even coat over leather jacket. This are not like a shearling. Typical all leather flight jacket are light summerwegh. Even motorcycle, typical real biker old time used veste over jacket.

That's what I said - leather jackets are not insulating so it makes no sense to use them as mid layer. And they are much more water proof than the overcoat in that picture. Again - makes no sense to wear a leather jacket under a coat unless the coat is more weather resistant than the jacket. Vest is a different story - at least you can see more of the jacket and it can be stylish (like denim vests on leather jackets in the biker world).

On topic:
This cleared customs and should be arriving tomorrow.
Can't wait to try it under my CXL Aero CR that is roomy in the body.
Likely the hem won't clear though.

Original pilot leather jacket similar to modern level 4 windshield layer.
So worn under isolation.
Some famous examples are SAS Zood Suit from parachute nylon.
Original Parachute Version (Thin Nylon Silk):
Primary mechanism: Windproof barrier. The tight weave (calendered nylon) creates a micro-dead-air space against the skin, reducing convective heat loss by 50–70% in breezy conditions. It's not "insulating" like wool but excels as a vapor-permeable shell—sweat evaporates quickly, preventing clammy chill.
Layering role: Worn over base layers (wool socks, cotton tee) for a "micro-climate" effect. Packs tiny, so it's for emergency warmth (e.g., stuffing with dry grass for extra loft).
Was replaced by light insulated layer which will be very close to leather jacket.

This how was used by military.
For example
Light summerwegh
Jacket only A-2 L-2b
Midwegh
A-2 wool pullover inside
MA-1
Heavyweight
Pullower, A-2,Shearling oder N-3
MA-1 under N-3a/b
This makes sense and how this used.
So Rayen Cosling wear not only fashion but pretty correct from layer system

My practice is to wear an appropriate full-zip fleece jacket, with Mandarin collar, inside the uninsulated leather jacket. Some fleece items are "heavier weight" (thicker) than others, so depending on the fit of the outer jacket, and the fit of the fleece, sometimes a heavier fleece can be used, or perhaps two lighter ones, or a fleece jacket and a fleece vest.

IMHO, unless the outer jacket has an internal pocket (such as USN G-1), a zipped upper chest pocket on the fleece garment is a great place to stash a cell phone, and nowadays a near-necessity.

It's my experience that a garment that is a little too big is always more comfortable to wear than one that is a little too small. Folks living in colder climates might initially consider "up-sizing" their outer jacket to allow for adding insulating undergarments in cooler weather.

A more exhaustive (some might say excessive) treatment of the subject here: https://www.vintageleatherjackets.o...rments-for-uninsulated-leather-jackets.40781/
