My practice is to wear an appropriate full-zip fleece jacket, with Mandarin collar, inside the uninsulated leather jacket. Some fleece items are "heavier weight" (thicker) than others, so depending on the fit of the outer jacket, and the fit of the fleece, sometimes a heavier fleece can be used, or perhaps two lighter ones, or a fleece jacket and a fleece vest.

IMHO, unless the outer jacket has an internal pocket (such as USN G-1), a zipped upper chest pocket on the fleece garment is a great place to stash a cell phone, and nowadays a near-necessity.

It's my experience that a garment that is a little too big is always more comfortable to wear than one that is a little too small. Folks living in colder climates might initially consider "up-sizing" their outer jacket to allow for adding insulating undergarments in cooler weather.
