Leather for Knife sheath

Any ideas on where to get the appropriate thickness of leather to make my own knife sheath? My grandfather left me some old Brazil-made knives, and I would like to make a new sheath for it. Online stores will do, unless anybody knows of anything in or around Buffalo, NY.
Cheers,
Jish

I can't help but wondering if leather from old work boots from a thrift shop would suffice. Some old harness boots with plain uppers? Old leather for old knives!

When I was a young feller we used to take our old boots(cowboy), cut the top off of 'em and lace 'em into a knife sheath. Use the finger pull strap for a belt loop. Remember this was when a new pair of Tony Llama's were $40!!!!! And we wore 'em out pretty quick.
