I bought this Levi’s leather jacket made of calfskin online many years ago for a costume. I wanted it to look authentic so I splurged on something made of real leather rather than a poly-repro. I needed to place a back patch on it so I decided to use contact cement as an adhesive (yikes!)
Years later I pulled the jacket from my costume trunk and removed the patch to wear it as a daily leather jacket. I used a mix of olive oil and vinegar to remove the contact cement and it seemed to work well. However over time the back of the jacket, even in places I hadn’t applied the cement or vinegar started to fade noticeably. I tried repairing it with a coat of upholstery re-finishing and it worked for a time before fading back to this scuffed grey. Is there any way to restore and protect the black finish on the back of this jacket? Or will this require a more creative approach to hide my mistake?
