I've probably had 12 Aeros pass through my hands and the trajectory I've followed has been towards fewer and fewer amateur modifications. I'd alter the jacket only for your body shape and that's about it. Aero even advises against an inside pocket because it eventually imprints upon the silhouette of the jacket.

RE: Cord hems. These are the before and after shots for the HB

You can see that the cotton drill has slightly sagged over the edge of the leather

The cotton drill that's left feels quite taught now I must say. I like it
As for the herc here is a shot of the hem now with the moleskin lining
The lining feels quite taught all over with not much slack at all. I tried to gather some slack at the joins (where there is most) with my fingers to see if there was enough for it to extend over the edge of the leather hem, and there isn't.

Did you read the thread? A few posts have mentioned some of the bad modifications which customers have had done, and I suggest that a cord strip is hardly that.
I reckon counting some from the sale pages and second hand, and some of those got moved on quickly, that I've had a few more than 12. I bet some here have had a lot more than that too.

I can't understand why Aero, and from the looks of it, Alexander Leathers as well would have a problem with the cord or leather strip at the bottom. If one examines leather jackets from other iconic manufacturers such as Lewis Leathers, Schott, Johnson Leathers, Langlitz, Vanson and Fox Creek, it becomes apparent these builders incorporate the leather folded over the lining at the bottom and then stitch everything together. I notice on my Aeros the sleeves are built in the same manner.....the lining goes right to the bottom of the sleeve. Not so with other manufacturers.
As an expert seamstress once told me, the manufacturers make them this way to not only protect the lining from abrasion against belts, watches, etc...but also as a means to prevent the lining from sagging below the jacket by stitching the bottom of the leather over the lining to tidy everything up.

It was a long time ago that I had alpaca - I had to get rid of that jacket as it aggravated my skin - but if memory serves I would say the alpaca is definitely warmer.
Having tried them all for me it's cotton drill or moleskin from now on only. I don't buy these jackets to be warn cos let's face it - leather jackets aren't warm. *Unless it comes with shearling underneath.
@ SJ I agree with your point about alterations. Yet I'm still undecided at present about the cord hems. The one on my HB has improved it, but the Herc in its current state seems like it won't need one

As far as I know Coffee Alexanders have no problem with the cord hem - an observation I make based on seeing one on one of Plumbline's latest acquisitions. On that roadster of mine the lining appears fairly taught also, so I don't think it needs that

That's good news about AL doing the cord hem....I stand corrected. And yes schitzo, I agree the lining on your Roadster appears to be snug fitting to the leather.
The before and after pics of your beautiful HB that you submitted are testimony to the pleasing aesthetics as a result of the cord strip.
I compare the leather or cord strip to crown molding on a room ceiling/wall or shoe molding to the floor baseboards. Are they needed? Depends, if the sheet rock was hung sloppily, then yes. If the floor was not square and there was a gap between the flooring and the baseboard then the shoe molding might be necessary. At the end of the day, most people would after seeing your submitted before and after pics of the HB would select the "after" jacket just based on looks. The protection factor offered by that strip is an added, and maybe needed, feature that enhances the wearing longevity.

You could always go for a full corduroy lining.
Actually I very nearly did just that. It was only after I read a Fanch post about the warmth of cord all over that I had a re-think and changed my mind. That and the fact that moleskin is so nice

Another thing to bear in mind is HWT (hot water treatment).
Yes, I know you do it at your own risk, but it can(IMHO) improve the look of a jacket.
And it just might shrink the hide, but not the lining.
So that little strip of cord could save some sleepless nights!:eeek:

I have a couple of Filson moleskin vests that are very effective for layering underneath and don't have a clue why moleskin jacket linings haven't received more recognition on the FL. Schitz, you might have helped to open the floodgates!

Moleskin can be a little grabby in sleeves (it's what my Bootlegger's sleeves are lined with), but nothing particularly annoying. Just have to keep hold of your shirt cuff while pulling it on... It is, however, quite a warm lining; my Bootlegger (tartan in the body) is normally too warm come May, while the Thirties Halfbelt (all gaberdine) has a few more weeks left in its 'season'.
Hmm. What do y'all make of this? If any of you have had a jacket with an inside pocket for a long time please comment. I am just wondering if there is a way past this - i.e. to have one without it imprinting. Perhaps extra fabric sewn onto the lining with a simple button closure at the top - like in some shopping centre bought jackets I've had - would be less problematic long term

Well..I have 2 G-1 style inside pockets on all of my Aero utility jackets but one. Bootlegger(2011)..Stewart(2011)...Highwayman(2001)..and HalfBelt(2003). Never had a problem with the pockets 'printing' with the Heavy FQHH. I supposed with a lighterweight hide they could. I ordered them with the pockets and no one at Aero suggested there would be a problem.

Altho I haven´t really decided if it is a problem, the fact is that it shows through often.
Maybe it depends on how snug the jacket is.
Look at my avatar picture, you can clearly see the front pockets through the hide.
You can also see it on my FQHH jacket very clearly:

It is even more evident now when there have been some wear on the panel that is coming through....I have no picture of it tho.
It seems to be worse with a lighter hide and this is why I never got the caferacer in midweight hide, look at Aeros own picture:
