Lined Fedora

I have a Beaver Brand fedora style hat but it is not lined,is it a lower grade hat? It does say 10x on the sweatband and also Pedigreed registered Thoroughbred moleskin finish....

It doesn't have to mean that. Some of the manufanturers that made an ultra light weight felt hat often did not line them. But if you could show pics it would be easier to tell for sure.

Generally, the absence or presence of a liner doesn't have any relevance to the quality of the felt.

Other than feeling soft on a bald head, and perhaps adding a little warmth, does a thin hat liner serve any actual function? Maybe it's put there to help prevent moisture and dirt and oils from working into the felt? Or is it just aethetics?

I think it could be to trap air and keep you warmer. That could be why panamas don't have them. Like a coat. It also makes the hat look smarter, as most dress hats I have seen have them.

All of the above, along with free advertising for the maker. The plastic itself is, I'm pretty certain, there to block oils and things like Brylcreem and other pomades typically used in men's hair during the apex of hat popularity.
