Lost Worlds Appalachian

I just got this monster jacket from Lost Worlds, the Appalachian. I asked Stu for his thickest hide and he did not disappoint. This thing is an absolute beast. Haven’t put it on the scale but I’m guessing 8 lbs. it's stiff as a board right now, but once it breaks in it should fit like a glove.

His horsehide is not as stiff as my Vanson CHP in steerhide when new but feels way more substantial. The lining is very thick for a nylon, which he did warn me about. I think the lining will outlast the jacket ! The pockets, 5 in front, including a large map pocket on the left side and two in the back which serve zero purpose whatsoever but they are a great conversation starter. The lining of the pockets is in a heavy canvas that definitely won’t tear. No pockets inside the jacket though. I went with the full Crown zips, which was the right call for this jacket. They are amazing zips even thought they are about 75 years old if they stopped making them in 1950. I’m waiting for the mouton collar which Stu forgot to ship, so I’ll update the post when I receive it. I also asked for no studs in the kidney panel, since I’m not a fan of any studs. The only complaint is the belt, which is meh for the price. The belt is not included and is extra, and I was expecting a better made belt.

i was skeptical of the Lost Worlds jackets but now I’m fully convinced that they are: 1) worth the money and 2) totally indestructible. If I was still riding, this is the jacket to wear.

I have to give Stu credit for the fit. he asked me how tall I am and what’s my weight. That’s it!! To be honest, I was nervous but this thing fit perfectly. You really just have to trust him.

I’m serious, the man didn’t want sh**. He basically told me that he knows what he’s doing and not to worry. Trust me I was worrying the whole time until I put it on.

I think a lot of people think they have some unusual body when really a generic size will fit them fine.

Or they want to get **** over centimeters difference when the pattern, leather thickness, lining will have a much bigger effect than a couple cms measurement.

But he must get the occasional customer that his run and *** fits dont work for.

My thought was that if it didn’t fit, I would send it back and he would have to fix. If I started specifying every millimeter and it didn’t fit, then it’s on me to pay him more money to fix.

If you started specifying every millimeter Stu would end the conversation right there. On the two jackets I ordered from him I was able to specify sleeve and back length but absolutely nothing else was on the table when it came to changing measurements. I also found his off the cuff guess at my size to be spot on both times.

Yeah, we talked zippers for over 1/2 hour, he explained in detail his horsehide leather, the pockets, the lining (he went on and on with the lining ), etc. We were on the phone for over 1 hour. NOTE: If any of you want a Lost Worlds jacket, call Stu. Don’t email him, call him.

The second I attempted to talk measurements, he cut me off, asked me how tall I was and how much do I weigh. I told him and he told me what my size is according to his vast database of similar customers. I mentioned to him that I’m a 48 regular on my Vanson CHP (which is a similar crosszip) and he told me that other manufacturer sizes mean nothing to him. I also attempted to modify the jacket and he proceeded to tell me that he would do it, however there would be NO returns even if it didn’t fit. The only thing he allowed me to change were the studs in the kidney panel (gone) and back length and sleeve length. I kept the sleeve and back to his pattern size.

I paid him, and what came out is the best jacket I have. Very happy.

This seems to be common and makes sense. Even within the same manufacturer, you might use a different size on a different model/pattern. Even if you specify it which specific model, it would be messy for another manufacturer to keep track of all the pattern differences that everyone else has.

Still I'm a bit shocked, as height and weight can be misleading. For example, I was once talking via DM with another lounger who had pretty much same height and weight to me, but while I would wear 44 on jackets and 32 on jeans, he would wear (IIRC) 42 on jackets and 36 jeans. Then there would also be the matter of what fit do you prefer (relaxed, slim). With pictures it could become more apparent we just had different proportions, but then again, Stu just went with height and weight.

Dunno, obviously Stu will know his stuff so much better than me that we do not belong together in the same conversation, but still feels weird to me and I would be having second thoughts until I had my jacket.

Stuart isn't that inflexible once you get to know him.
I for example have always had a hybrid pattern with the upper shoulders and arms of a 42, tapered down to the bottom hem of a 40, and the length of a 44.
He accepted doing that for my first jacket as i had tried a 44 made for someone we both knew, and he trusted my feedback from trying on that size 44.
He won't go into millimeters and minute measurements, but he isn't afraid of tweaking things.

I have also had conversations with him that lasted more than three hours, to the point where i ended up feeling bad for taking his time, but he just loves to talk about anything jacket related....

PS: it's not a map pocket, it's a sandwich pocket! You can fit a full sub in there.

Yeah, that pocket will never hold a map! It’s probably gonna hold a tripod!!!

Once you break the barrier with Stu he’ll let you do stuff. I’m talking to him about a Suburban next. Now that he knows my size, he relaxes a bit. The main change I want is to add an inside storm flap on the puller side.
