Poor guy: having to marry (in between two very attractive actresses) one of the riches women in the world -- Barbara Hutton. (Granted, she was a nutcase, but still ...)

Now please forgive my vaugeness of these details, it's been awhile since I've watched it, but according to The Making of a Legend: Gone With The Wind, Vivien Leigh wasn't allowed to live with her then boyfriend Lawrence Olivier because the studio wanted her to maintain a pure and innocent image while she was playing Scarlett. Talk about a double standard!

I believe he was also told by the studio he couldn't live with Randolph Scott when he was/they were single as it promoted the homosexual gossip.

Might not have been bad as all that...I imagine the women in the house across the street from MGM weren't exactly $2 cowtown fun-girls.

Given those SNL interviews we can't post, that might be the exact kind of girl he was used to. :D

While studios certainly were very heavy handed in their dealings with talent, Cary Grant would not be a good case for illustration as he was the first actor to successfully flee the studio system. He had only one five year contract (Paramount 1931-1936) after which he was a free agent, out from under the thumb of the studios. His first marriage, to Virginia Cherrill, occurred in the last year of his contract so it's possible that it was arranged but his subsequent marriages were certainly of his own volition.

I remember reading some magazine column stuff, dating to 1940, that linked Jim romantically to Olivia deHavilland. He eventually married a highly classy beauty named Gloria McLean.

That's a "god why am I doing this" look. Poor Mr. Stewart

I doubt that seriously, since it has been reported (via IMDb, I know) that Jimmy Stewart's last words were "I'm going to be with Gloria now." I think he really loved and cherished her.

No doubt. And if you had seen some of the pictures I saw at the Stewart Museum*, she really was Hollywood-beautiful. Or maybe better.

*There are very few pix of the Stewarts together online. Mrs. S is often confused with actress Gloria Stuart (born Gloria Stewart!).

There is no reason to doubt the genuine nature of the Stewrt's relationship or marriage. Their marriage lasted until death, and Jimmy wasn't the sort to marry for appearance.

Jimmy Stewart, during his bachelorhood, had an excellent reputation as a "lady's man". Knowing what I know of Mayer's twisted, controlling nature, this story doesn't surprise me at all. But why Stewart had prove himself in a brothel is beyond my understanding, especially when all Mayer had to do is ask his latest inamorata.

Did any movie star like Louis B. Mayer?

Yes. Katherine Hepburn did.

KH and Irene Selznick, LB's daughter, were great friends.
