Yes, about 1/2 block outside the Quarter on St. Charles Avenue (which is what Royal Street is called after it crosses Canal Street). Meyer's has been there over a hundred years. They used to modify hats to a degree, i.e., they could change ribbons and so forth. I have one inexpensive brown teardrop fedora from them; I had them change the black grosgrain ribbon to a tan leather belt with a buckle. But the guy they had doing their customizations retired. Mr. Sam, the patriarch of the clan and the shop, tells me they don't do anything except steam-shaping of brims.
However, if you want choice, baby, it's all there: inexpensive wool felts, Akubras (mostly the Outback-style hats, though I think they carry the Squatter), straws, Stetson, Dobbs, Biltmore (at least they did some years ago), etc. Their large display windows will let you check out the styles they have, and the prices, too.

I bought a straw at their shop many moons ago and found it to be a wonderful experience with pleasant and knowledgeable folks. Just last year I recommended them to a friend who was visiting NO and he had a similar experience. It was his first hat purchase and he spent over an hour and a half trying on dozens of hats (at my suggestion) and he said they could not have been more patient.

Yes, you will melt. I've lived here most of my life, and am supposedly inured to the heat and humidity.
Panda feathers! No one becomes inured to this kind of climate.
I've seen Latins and Blacks acclimated to similar climates in Miami/Caribbean. Generally, Caucasians don't seem to function as well with the possible exception of the Irish enclave in Jamaica.
The real killer in NOLA is the humidity. I remember once climbing a flight of stairs to reach a hotel room. There was water dripping and running down the walls. Serious humidity. It's nice in January and February, however. Lots of humidity in Juneau as well but not much heat to make it miserable.
