Told ya!

I believe this was taken in the CBI theatre just after the war. Imagine how many must be in that pile. I've got a couple shots of C-46s in various stages of disassembly as well- they weren't worth the gas it would take to fly them home.

Well, at least that weapons carrier seems to have survived the carnage! I'd settle for that in my driveway.

I'm really curious as to what happened to all the F-51s that were flown by the Air National Guard in the post war years. There were hundreds distributed all over the country, and many Guard units transitioned to jets, then back to F-51s, then on to jets again in the 1950s. Where'd they all go?! They aren't sitting on the ramps at Davis-Monthan with the rest of the boneyard fleet.

They were in the late '60s...

...and the smelter turned 'em into skillets and beer cans in the '70s.

I'm sure my precious #1512 will meet the same fate in the next 20 years.

...think of all the F6Fs that got pushed off the back of carriers on the way home across the Pacific!

 I'm trying not to!

I turned down a Historian position at Davis-Monthan this past year. It was tough, because I thought of the hours I could have spent out amongst those old birds. It just wasn't time to leave here, though. :(
