Hi: Does anyone have a recommendation for thick motorcycle jacket leather repairs such as zipper replacement on horsehide in Los Angeles. It's been many years since I had this done and my tailor is no longer. Ideally, the shop would be within 10 miles of Hollywood and reasonably priced. When I surveyed in the past, many shops didn't have experience with thick jackets or their machines were not designed for heavy leather. Thanks much for your help!

Can you share what is wrong with the zipper? Are you 100% sure the jacket needs a full zip replacement? Maybe only the male side? Share images, maybe some of us can help you out with your project. Zip replacement is often overpriced and teribly install. Maybe you can tackle the replacement your self? I can help you with that.

Thanks, but no; I want a shop. I've collected for 35 years and am quite knowledgeable about vintage cycle jackets; I bought my first, a Schott Perfecto, in 1983. I've long done minor repairs myself. Also, while there are some wonderful and knowing members here, I’ve been disappointed by the incorrect information I've received from even experienced collectors who should know better. And when I politely mentioned the many errors -- without identifying any offenders by name -- not a single one of them offered an apology or even acknowledgement of their mistakes. This is how false information spreads like a virus online, undermining the credibility of forums, shops, and sellers.

I also bought my first Schott in 1983 in a place in Melrose called Warbabies? Remember them? They used to have the biggest selection of motorcycle jackets.
You know, there are many members here who can understand what you say. Since I do not know anyone in all of L.A. County who can help you, I would not recommend anybody. The only ones I know who can do this work flawlessly are Jauregui and Tapado Power. Both are retired. One lives in Mexico, and the other is in San Diego.

Sad but true, all those nice leather repair shops are disappearing. Even good shoe cobblers are getting hard to find in our area. Nacho from Reparacion de calzado Jalisco is the only one whom I trust these days.

Good luck with your repair.

How is this helpful when I specifically stated that I want a shop in Los Angeles?
My apologies. I know of no shops there other than Cal-Leathers, and that's not in LA.

I live about ~ 1800 miles away and have had great experiences with both these shops I mentioned replacing zippers for me. I just had to ship the jacket to them. I trust people enough to ship away a valued jacket to a shop with a good reputation. I also have a local Amish shop, that is a 3-hour drive away, that does great work for very little money.

You have to understand this is a world-wide forum of folks who want to help. But since most of us do not live right there, we cannot help that much with specifics for a drive to and walk-in shop. Please do not discourage the messengers here, we're all just here to help
