The sweat on my old Resistol San Antonio has several splits so I'm thinking I want to get the sweat replaced. Who would I go to for this? Thanks for any info.
I just won an old Stetson Stratoliner on eBay. It's going to be a great fixer-upper when I'm done, but I'm a bit concerned about the sweatband. It's rather old and looks fairly "rotten" for lack of a better term. It's flaking around the upper end (crown-ward). I hate to lose the "Royal Stetson Stratoliner" blazon. Is there anything I can do to help save it? Should I just leave it in until it goes to dust (in my hair), or should I simply give up the "status symbol" and replace it?
It really should be replaced Yhat but I've seen guys in the past cut the "Stetson" part out of the old and glue it on the new. I can't speak for how comfortable that would be, but there it is.
Art, I was actually considering that!!! I wish I could get it reproduced, but it I'll definitely replace it.
Perhaps you could advise me on a related issue (I've actually posted this to the Stratoliner crew as well). There's an associated problem arising from the band's poor condition. During the course of the decay, the "orange" leather dye of the band bled somewhat into the felt. The first two cleanings with Scout Hat Cleaner have done a marvelous job at getting out 90% of the stains (and it's really starting to look good), but I can't seem to penetrate deeply enough to get out the residual tinted ring left by the band. Any guidance on deeper cleaning? I know I could probably send it away, but that's like sending your new bride off on her own honeymoon (with somebody else). I hate to part company just when we've found one another. I'd like to exhaust my DIY options first.
