I just acquired vintage leather coat made by A.Mincieli NY. Very well made coat.
My question is: Anyone seen this type of coat before?
An ex-NYPD wrote see photo please, stating it is from early 80's! I thought this coat goes back to the 60's since the buttons are from that era.
Thanks for your help.

That's an interesting jacket, It looks like a NYPD Mounted/Highway jacket but they don't have pockets ( at least those authorized since the 1980's) and it appears the "pockets" are just openings for internal access.. If its legit ( which it looks ) its pre-1970-1960, any older than that they were probably wearing wool jackets/overcoats

I learned my phone number with letters and numbers in the late 60 early 70's

Thanks for the info. The pockets are real with thick canvas like fabric. The leather looks like horsehide, but not 100% sure. I ride a motorcycle and this coat is a cold wind beater. I have other jackets that are shorter. This coat covers my thighs which makes a big difference.

Great point. I noticed the phone number not conforming.
Thank you.
I tried to find any photos of PD wearing this type of long coat. There is a shorter version worn today by NYPD and NJPD. See photos

Is there a way to bypass the pockets and get your hands inside the jacket? looking at the photo of the interior, the slits stand out.

It looks the part, and for sure its a well made jacket and suitable for the cold on a MC.. I just don't think this was ever an "official" NYPD coat.

The Duty belt has always been worn on the outside of the jacket.. no pockets.

Great photos..Thanks.
The pocket does have a slit to access pats etc.
I just posted photos showing evidence of NYPD HP patch and a badge.
Which indicates the jacket was a service jacket!

Thanks for the mounted NYPD photos. Very nice.
I would say this coat was a service coat at one time.
See photos I posted.
It looks like it had a Highway Patrol patch ( wheel and arrow).

Yes, I have seen this jacket. Same maker. You are correct 70's to 80's
I noticed lapels has different style.
Jacket on lady NYPD looks horsehide. Not sure if my jacket and one you posted are?

Thanks..
I love the classic leather look.
I noticed many PD are going with synthetic material for obvious reasons.
I recently was in Dallas, TX I noticed their mounted PD had short
dallas mm (002).jpg
leather jackets.

Hello. I hope you are still looking for an answer to this question. I may have the correct explanation.

I am a Japanese collector, so please excuse any awkward or unnatural English.

The NYPD once used three different leather coats/jackets.

The first is the RMP Leather Jacket. This is a short leather jacket, similar in style to an Ike jacket, worn by officers assigned to RMPs (police cars) at precincts starting 1970. It is very well known, but it is not relevant here.

The second is a slightly longer leather jacket, extending a bit below the waist, known as the Leather Blouse or sometimes the Winter Coat (the official name varies by period, but for simplicity I will refer to it here as the Leather Blouse). This appeared around the 1960s and, as discussed in this thread, it is the uniform currently used by the NYPD Highway Patrol and Mounted Unit.

The third is a knee-length leather coat known as the Leather Coat or Overcoat (again, I will consistently call it the Leather Coat here). This was adopted around 1938 and, at least in regulations, existed until 1995. However, in actual practice it was probably used only until around the 1980s.

To state my conclusion first: I believe the jacket in question is exactly this third type, the Leather Coat (or Overcoat). In other words, yes—based on the length, the shape of the buttons and eyelets, the presence of pockets, and the sewing marks from a patch (which match those of old Motorcycle Precinct patches), it is reasonable to conclude that this is an authentic NYPD Leather Coat.

The Leather Coat was originally adopted around 1938 for officers of the Motorcycle Precinct (the predecessor of today’s Highway Unit). Until the current Leather Blouse appeared in the 1960s, it served as the primary winter uniform. After the Leather Blouse became the standard from the 1970s onward, the Leather Coat gradually declined in use.

As far as I know, regulations concerning this coat appear in the 1972 Patrol Guide, the 1992 Revision Notice, and the 1995 Interim Order. In the earlier document it is referred to as an “Overcoat,” and in the later ones as “Coat, Winter Leather (Leather Coat),” but all of these refer to the same garment. Previously, officers could choose either the shorter “Blouse” or the longer “Coat,” but by at least the year 2000 the Leather Coat had been removed from the rules. Only the shorter Leather Blouse survived, as is the case today.

The official regulatory description of the Leather Coat should also answer the question being discussed here. In the 1972 PG, 1992 RN, and 1995 IO, it is described as follows:

Coat, Winter, Leather (Optional): Black horsehide leather with lining, detachable black mouton collar and regulation gold buttons. Length – 2 inches above break in back of knee. Worn with Sam Browne Belt (without shoulder strap), and uniform shirt and tie.

This means that Sammy1960’s coat originally came with a detachable black mouton collar. I also believe the leather is indeed horsehide; NYPD leather jackets from this era were basically all made of horsehide (same as Leather Blouse, RMP Jacket).

Another distinctive feature of the Leather Coat is the presence of pockets that do not exist on the current Leather Blouse. I believe these are through-pockets designed to allow access to the pockets of breeches. If you look at photographs from before 1960, you can find many examples of Leather Coats with the same design.

I hope this post serves as a good answer to the question.
Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.
