Gary Owens in the traveler's fedora.

THE READERS have spoken: Our mild-mannered accountant and reluctant hat model looks his best in the traveler?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s fedora.
And, boy, did they speak. The Daily Break presented pictures of Gary Owens, a Norfolk tax man, in six hats and asked readers to choose.
More than 900 people cast votes online and by phone and mail for the traveler?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s fedora. About 85 percent rated the look ?¢‚Ǩ?ìexcellent?¢‚Ǩ? or ?¢‚Ǩ?ìgood.?¢‚Ǩ?
Owens agrees. He bought that very hat from Stark & Legum in downtown Norfolk.
He reports he is happy in his hat but noted the weather became unseasonably warm right after the story ran last week.

?¢‚Ǩ?ìPeople kept asking me, 'Gary, where?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s the hat??¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve taken some good-natured ribbing at work.?¢‚Ǩ?
The closest contender was a navy blue wool cap, with about 45 percent of voters rating it highly.
The least-loved hat was a tweed stingy brim, the type favored by football coach Bear Bryant. A whopping 40 percent rated it ?¢‚Ǩ?ìhorrible,?¢‚Ǩ? and 30 percent said it was ?¢‚Ǩ?ìbad.?¢‚Ǩ?
Those mailing in responses showed a surprising fondness for the Tyrolean hat, straight out of ?¢‚Ǩ?ìThe Sound of Music.?¢‚Ǩ?
?¢‚Ǩ?ìI?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d feel good walking down the street with him wearing it as he would appear to be very confident and businesslike,?¢‚Ǩ? wrote Pat Hoosack of Norfolk.
?¢‚Ǩ?ìA nice touch of zip,?¢‚Ǩ? wrote Sandy DeMille of Norfolk. ?¢‚Ǩ?ìGood proportion of brim and crown for facial features and head length.?¢‚Ǩ?
Bernice Deal of Portsmouth even enclosed a poem praising the traveler?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s fedora: ?¢‚Ǩ?ìHis children will look at dad and say/Your hat has really made my day.?¢‚Ǩ?
