Viewing the Peter ***n tv series by A&E channel, there are a lot of charaters sporting various styles of fedoras. Interestingly, the main character never sports a hat. Hershel Bernardi sports a hat throughout the series as Lt. Jacobi. As one of the last detective television series of the 1950s, Peter ***n ranks as one of the last detective shows that featured the use of hats. Later series like 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye, did not feature the use of hats only a year after the Peter ***n series.

I love ***n. Over the years, I managed to collect every episode plus the 2 movies on DVD.

Someone once said (I think it was mystery author Max Allan Collins) that Peter ***n was the bridge we took from Mike Hammer to James Bond. It would make sense that would apply to the hats.

***n Movies/Complete Series?

Brian,
What are the two Peter ***n movies you are referring to and are they out in DVD? Is the A&E two volumes of Peter ***n the complete series, or were there more? Thanks,
RHY

The first one starred Stevens, written by Blake Edwards and future Exorcist author William Blatty, directed by Edwards in 1967. Shot in color (bad idea), it featured Ed Asner as Jacobi and did not feature Lola Albright (big mistake). Outstanding music by Mancini. It does not measure up to the quality of the series.

The second one was a pilot movie on ABC TV in 1989 (set in the early 1960's). It starred Peter Strauss who did a good job as ***n. Barbara Williams played Edie. Edwards wrote and directed. It was fair to good but it saddled ***n with a ditzy secretary and other problems the series avoided. It did not draw a big enough audience to warrant a series.

There is no legitimate DVD release of the first movie. There are cheap versions of the second season.

As for the A&E DVD's, they are from ***n's first season from NBC. It is missing some episodes so it is not complete. ***n moved to ABC for the third season without any noticeable changes. No official DVD release available of those episodes.

How would I go about finding copies of the second and third seasons? I was looking at IMDB and it showed a total of 114 episodes in three seasons. The A&E titles were listed in the first season as you stated.
