I just found this website. It's the story of pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where many immigrants to Canada arrived. Particularly interesting are the stories of the children from Britain sent to Canada during the War, and the war brides.

I remember in the 60s it cost 10 GB pounds to emmigrate to Canada, and Australia too. If you came back to England before 5 years you had to pay the full fare for the outward and the return journey to get back.

But it must have been so daunting for the child evacuees during WW2 to just leave home and Mum, Daddy was probably at war, and you were only 7 or 8 years old. What guts they had to go 3000 miles across a U Boat infested Atlantic Ocean, and how heart wrenching too for the mother to let them go.
I just could'nt even begin to imagine what it would be like, or feel like.
