I think this thread will prove to be very important. I know there are lots of ads from the post-1900 period floating around the lounge, but these early ads from the 1800’s really show the transformation of hats into the 20th century. They show a very important period in derby history and the start of the “soft hat” period which transformed into the fedora boom of the early-mid 20th century.
I’ve gone through close to 1000 pages of Clothier and Furnisher publications and picked out all the early hat ads. I’m still on the hunt for more!
According to the ads that I’ve collected thus far, it seems that around 1887 it wasn’t uncommon for a derby to have a 6 or 6 ¼ inch crown. The ads from 1896-1897 show that within a decade the crown height and shape had changed. It seemed to have gone down to around 5 ¼ - 5 ½ which is where it remained into the 20th century.
Some interesting materials were used for Straw hats and summer hats, such as African Tree Bark. These ads are extremely interesting. If anyone has any pre-1900 ads, please ad them. THANKS!
