Wing Commander Tom Baker
(Filed: 10/04/2006)
Wing Commander Tom Baker, who has died aged 92, had completed a large number of daylight bomber sorties when he was selected to be lead navigator on the RAF's most audacious and dangerous low-level bombing raid, a large-scale attack against power stations near Cologne.
The crews of 54 Blenheim bombers gathered for briefing in the early hours of August 12 1941, when they learned that they were to attack the heavily-defended Knapsack and Quadrath power stations. At first, they were stunned: the bombers had to fly 250 miles over enemy territory in broad daylight and without a fighter escort, a prospect described by the deputy leader as "almost suicidal - it was the only time in my life that I saw my fellow aircrew grey and shaking".
