Yeah, those harpies. :) I think that flick was the culmination of his work.

i agree. then again, the first time i saw it was actually in a theatre...so it was beautiful to see it as it was meant to be seen. it made an impression. :D
i have to admit that the scene where posiden (sp? correct name of the king of the sea?? sorry...) holds the cliffs upright so the ship could pass through kinda gave me goosebumps. soooo cool.

although...i have a special place in my heart for h.g. wells' first men in the moon. :)

I met him at a fantasy film festival a few years ago. What a lovely, friendly, enthusiastic man.

(Me too on "Jason and the Argonauts"!)

Ray Harryhausen films say "Christmas" to me like nothing else....

I've always loved Ray Harryhausen - I saw Jason and the Argonauts in a theater during its original run when I was 9 or 10. Nuff said.

To all of us who were into sci-fi and fantasy films in the primitive days before 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars, he was - and remains - a god!

At around the time of Clash of the Titans, I visted a retrospective/exhibit of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in NY. Seeing his models up close was fantastic!

I have no interest in this set, though. I know that he was personally involved in colorizing the films, but sorry, I just don't want to see them in color. I'm a bit of a purist about this stuff...

But I'm glad that it's coming out: Earth vs. The Flying Saucers and 20 Million Miles to Earth are both prime examples of his artistry, and they deserve to be better known to modern audiences...

Well, you don't have to see them in color if you don't want to as the b&w version is included, but Harry himself has said that they were originally meant to be color films, the budget just wouldn't allow it at the time. At least he isnt going all George Lucas on his films. I keep waiting for a CGI enhanced American Graffiti to come out...

On another note, when I was a kid, I was absolutely fascinated with the mechanical owl in Clash of the Titans. I loved that little guy.

Even though I am a Star Wars child, I am easily sucked in to Harryhausen's world. Sure the models and animation may not be as smooth as what we have today...but the monsters have something CGI monsters don't. Short of not being alive or really sixty feet tall, they are REAL. You can go see them in a museum. Digital monsters don't exist past the 2D.
The sad thing is that most modern audiences take one look at the jumpy animation and immediately write it off as primitive and laughable. They don't linger long enough to catch the nuances Harryhausen threw into his work. The nuances that bring it to life.
When I saw Jason and the Argonauts in the theatre, everyone sat there with a look of amusement on their faces and they actually laughed at it. I have to admit...I was totally captivated and into it...and I got the chills a few times. lol
