One of my all time favorite character actors, and one of the great TV faces of the '70s. His encounter with Archie Bunker in a stalled elevator remains one of the funniest memories of my youth -- no one could do the haughty-glare like him.
There's a great story about the time he appeared on some forgotten local talk show and the host, in discussing Mr. Browne's distinctive voice, made the rather impolitic remark that he didn't "sound black." Browne gave the host The Look, and replied "Well, we had a white maid!" lol
My favorite line of his from The Cowboys (right before Bruce Dern is about to hang him):
