Rough-out questions

First, Are the rough-outs leather thinner than the normal leather boots (russet service shoe) I imagine them to be..more collapsable or flimsy like other suede boots I've handled in the past, but is that true or not?

Seconly, What's the differnce in the Army ones and the USMC ones?

Thirdly, does one repro mfgr make a darker one (my preference) than the others?

Do a search- there's a lot of guff on here about service shoes...

They're standard thickness, maybe even thicker, mine are thicker than the russets. They're not suede- suede is usually thin or split and used for less sturdy items of clothing or footwear. "Flesh-out" is just the reverse of the hide(not the smooth/outside- but the flesh side)The Roughout colour is usually just the reverse side of "natural" (undyed)hide. You may not have a meaningful colour choice between vendors. It was never intended as a "finish", more to avoid finishing.

The idea of roughout is that it ca n take a lot of waterproofing but it was a dumb idea.

USMC roughouts should have a narrower toe shape than the Army style.
The rivet in the upper is omitted.

Why do you say it is a dumb idea, Bellytank?

BTW, if you want the color to be darker all you have to really do is add waterproofing, like sno-seal or other wax or dubbin. It will seal the boots nicely as well as turn them several shades darker.

I thought/read/heard/observed that the result was worse than finished side out.

Was there any differnece in the boot's soles (Army vs USMC), they were both completely rubber, no leather ? Also, I notice some of the repro have a white stitch and some darker - is that non-specific?
