Royal Navy cap, which on the inside label bears the following:
I'm never quite sure what the correct name for this style of hat is... I've been wearing hats like this since 1995, mostly corduroy civilian versions - on my third black one (back when I wore them as an only hat, I found you tend to get about four or five years out of one before they start to go very grey and faded) now, and still have my original brown one. Very comfortable hats to wear, and not so much of a worry with wind as a brimmed hat. I also tend to the opinion they look better with a peacoat (or even some longer military types) and sweater than does a fedora. Also nice for a change of one fancies a more nautical look. In the past they used to attract more negative comments - "Hey Captain Scarlet", "hello sailor", and - my favourite - "*** Spanish train driver" being among my favourites, though I've noticed an absence of those in recent years.
Anyhoo, I've been planning a navy one for a while. I've owned them from several brands (most commonly Kangol - which I was wearing long before that ****** Liam Gallagher, I might add!) and inspected more, and this particular model is equal or superior to the very best of them. A real quality feel of a hat. High quality, quilted lining, all stitching nice and tight, very neatly put together. 70% Wool, 10% Polyamide, 10% Polyester & 10% "other." To the touch, it feels like wool with just a hint of something to improve water repelling capabilities. Fit is superb - it's the first of these hats that I've seen which has actually been sized accurately. All my others, like the vast majority of casual caps, have been the more generic "S,M,L etc" sizing. Being a fairly standard medium at 57, this has never been a problem for me, but there is just that extra sense of a quality hat when you slip on something sized just right. Made in France. I would encourage anyone who wants a hat in this style to seek out one of these. I'm assuming Imper is a brand, but is Camaret a model or a type?
Normally in a store I'd pay around GBP20 for one of these hats; this one came in new and unworn at GBP10.70 plus a couple of quid for postage on OFAS. Great deal made better by the fact it was being sold by a hospice charity, meaning all the profit goes to a great cause.
No photos of me wearing it yet (above are from the eBay auction), but I'll post some as and when time allows.
