    Two questions:

Are you looking for an Open Road specifically, or a thin ribbon model?

...and are you set on a 25 or would you be interested in a 3X, etc?

This 25 has been on sale a little while, it looks to be an early to mid 50s hat if I am not mistaken:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-50s-ST...E-FEDORA-HAT-Casual-Cap-Sz-7-1-8/303238715470

You can probably make a decent offer for it.

Thanks, Hurricane Jack! I can’t thank you enough for your stellar efforts. I owe you a big favor. I’ll check out the Goodwill auction site and also give them a call at the number you’ve provided. Who knows? Maybe I’ll snag the one you went looking for.

  4. If they tell you it's for sale on the floor there, let me know. Maybe I can think of a reason to head that way. Otherwise it could be a while before it gets listed for auction. Many of us have bought off their auction website & Goodwill is capable of shipping. If they expect to realize $60 in an auction, maybe they would be willing to sell for that plus shipping.

Sorry guys, I have no idea which store I saw the hat at--I was in town to have a few words with a fellow who sent me some rather rude emails; I saw the sign on my way out of town and dropped in.

Edited to add: FWIW, I took I-29 south into the city, and north out.

I called and talked to one of the employees today. He was pretty clueless. He said I’d have to be there when they “opened a new bin” if I hoped to find a hat. He said the one you went looking for is more than likely long gone. The guy wasn’t willing to search the store for it. Darn.

I’ll keep an eye on the Goodwill auction site. If you see anything nice out there, please give me a shout. Thanks again for your kindness. You really went out of your way to help. Much appreciated!

Thanks, Jim. It was well worth knowing about, even if we couldn’t!’t find it.

  9. You're welcome. Based on what JJ posted I did check out a major thrift store yesterday that is not a Goodwill store, but the hat was not there. I had other business in the area, & several yrs ago I bought a hat there for another FL member when it was an antique mall & consignment store. Otherwise I'm at a loss of where JJ could have been "from I-29".

Something will turn up for you, I'm sure.

I would like to have an Open Road Twenty Five specifically. But I’m resigned to the reality that I may not find one. I’m going to keep looking for one for a while, though.

Yes in time one will turn up. The 25 OR is a must for any OR collection. How are you set for 7x ORs? I’d be interested in knowing what all ORs you have so far? You are a 71/4 if i recall?

    Hi Bowen-

    Thanks for asking.

    I own the following ORs: Silverbelly, 7 1/8 and 7 1/4; Black, 7 1/4; and Sage, 7 1/8 - all 6Xs. I also own a 10 X straw OR, 7 1/8. No 7Xs or Twenty Fives, though.

    Thanks Tom:
I was just being nosey. I try to try and keep in mind who has what and who’s looking for what. You run across something and it’s nice to refer folks.
Far as ORs. I enjoy my collection of ORs. They are a very versatile hat style that works with about anything. Plus it’s interesting to see the subtle changes through time of the different periods. I particularly like the period with the round gold liner crest. The quality seems about the highest, imho,of all.
They’ve stood the test of time for good reason!

    Bowen-

Thanks for the good tip. I’ll be looking for the round gold liner crest. Your questions didn’t seem nosey at all. I was glad to answer them.

All my ORs are present day editions, which I understand are inferior to the old ones. Not a surprise. In fact, I can come up with a pretty good list of things that are lesser iterations of their older models.

I think my hunger for a nice, older OR Twenty Five is fueled by my desire for a finer, better made hat.

My two questions below got kicked back in the thread - but maybe they still apply?

  17. Tom, as Daniel pointed out you might want to consider a 3X which will be easier to find. The softness & hand of a 3X will run the gamut depending on the era, but what it will give you is a nice tall straight crown that you don't get with a modern 6X, if that is something you like.

    Daniel-

I’m looking specifically for an Open Road Twenty Five right now. I have a fist full of OR 6Xs. However, I do like thin ribbon hats and am always interested in looking at a nice one.

Sorry I missed your original post. Thanks for asking again.

Thanks, Jack. I didn’t know the OR 3Xs have a taller, straighter crown than the 6Xs. I’m learning a lot from you and my other FL mentors. You guys are great!

If you get a vintage 3X in your hands, you'll quickly realize that it exceeds the quality of a modern 6X by a country mile. It will likely have a 5 1/2" - 6" open crown, be much more pliable than the stamped out 6Xs you have purchased, and the construction quality will be much higher.

It really is night and day.
