Sitting down with a zipped up leather.

So this has been a question I’ve wanted to ask for a while. I just bought a really beautiful Real McCoy Mobster from another forum member here on tfl. The jacket is incredible it may be my favorite overall jacket. I think the jacket was made in be early 2000s. Now the thing that struck me Most about this jacket aside from the beautiful insane grain is that whoever owned it apparently literally never sat down in it while it was Zipped up. Now I personally make a point of zipping my jackets up and sitting down and molding my new leather to my body and ensuring the front of the jacket folds and wears in a pattern that I like. I do this with every single jacket I buy. I zip them up and will often drive to work over an hour each way scrunching down the front of the leather squishing and folding the leather until it is bent in a way that looks good both when I’m standing and when I’m sitting with the jacket. But I’ve noticed a lot of people freak out if the front leather gets bent like at all and I was just blown away that I had this 20 year old jacket that was still so stiff and not broken in because whoever owned it never sat down with it zipped up.
So I’m just curious do you guys zip up and sit down? It’s like my daily ab exercise with the lost worlds.

I do exactly what you do. What good is a jacket you can't zip up and sit down in? It's a freaking jacket.

I agree just a jacket but some are upwards of 3 thousand dollars and I wonder if people don’t commit to ownership and think they dont want to bend the leather too much so they can sell it down the line. The thing is that the jacket will completely change in its drape and fit once its really broken in.

I agree just wear it but I bet if you did like a poll, a lot of people generally don’t sit down with their leather zipped up. I have jackets with fragile zippers that I am scared to sit down in and bend and break the zipper. And some people don’t like the look of the front of the leather all bent out of shape. I’m curious is all

For me it’s not a question of a jacket getting creased when sitting down with it fastened but it really all depends on both the thickness of the leather and also the length of the jacket.

If the hide is something like CXL, steer or horse, or it’s a longer style I don’t see the point of putting any unnecessary stress on either the zip or buttons when it takes just seconds to undo the jacket.

As most buildings and vehicles have heating who needs to sit down for any length of time with a leather jacket done up anyway ?
Of course, there might be the odd occasion when you’re outside, such as at a sports event, but if it’s that cold a leather jacket probably isn’t the best thing to be wearing in those type of conditions.

Aside from stressing the zipper it’s not damaging right? I put a lot of effort into beating up the front and specifically bending the front of my jackets to break them in. I have this whole protocol where I put the jacket on, zip it up, put a fleece on over it, get in the car, do like an ab crunch to bend the leather and I’ll really squish it down and then drive my hour commute to work. It seems to break the jacket in altogether very quickly.

Every leather jacket should be made with a two way zip
I hate two way zippers with passion lol.

I don't understand the issue. Motorcycle jackets are designed to be worn on the motorcycle (duh!) which means they're short and don't have this 'problem'.

Aviator jackets are longer, their fronts bend when sitting down, so what?

Here's my Regius Aviator, bent front included. I actually think the creases look good, they add character. I don't want my jackets to look like they've been ironed.

Here in Europe people take public transportation instead of driving. Or they take their bicycle, or moped. Sitting down with their jackets zipped up.

The problem is almost every makers motorcycle jacket is too long.
Also, in this vicinity a jacket that you can’t wear zipped up isn’t very practical.

So the problem to fix is the jacket length, not the zipper :)

Agreed. If on bike, moped or motorcycle then I would presume whichever leather jacket is worn then it would be styled for that specific purpose and there shouldn’t be an issue.
Although if on public transport I would normally still unfasten whatever jacket/coat I was wearing, leather or otherwise.
