Sizing question Eastman g-1

Hi All,

I'm taking the plunge and purchasing my first G-1 from Eastman. Thanks to all who regularly post in here...the threads were invaluable in making my decision. I'm having trouble deciding between a 40 and a 42. I'm 50 years old, 5-9, 175lbs and my chest is 40 inches. I've usually worn a 40 in suit jackets and when I was younger and a little trimmer with less muscle I would size a 38. That being said I do not want the jacket to fit snug in anyway. While I may wear with a tee-shirt I want to be able to wear with a sweater or hoodie underneath as well. The other thing I don't like is an overly high waist. Am I right in sizing up to a 42 in this or will I be swimming in it? I also don't want it to be too oversized or baggy. The good thing is I can always return which I am prepared to do. Thanks

Have you looked at HPA's sizing guide for this jacket? It recommends a 40 based on your chest size, but FWIW, I'd recommended going with the 42. I also have a 40" chest, but am 20 lbs lighter than you. An ideal fit for me would be somewhere between the 40 and 42 (18.5" shoulder width and 22" pit to pit). Given the fact that you are wanting to wear a thicker layer underneath, the 42 sounds like the safer route.

BTW, there are plenty of original G-1's in great condition that can be had for the fraction of the price of an ELC, if you're possibly open to going that route.

I´d recommend getting the 42. Eastman´s G-1 runs pretty trim (not tight; just not very roomy).

You can have a look at the size calculator on their website. It works well for me.

I have a 42" chest and a size 44 M-422a. It works well but is NOT roomy at all.

Eastman run ‘snug’ so I’d size up one size. I’m a 46” chest and my ELC jackets are 48’s which leaves room for a light sweater underneath.

Thanks guys for your quick replies. One follow up question. I also have the option of buying a Buzz Rickson A Pritzker & Sons g-1. Is there any consensus opinion on how this compares with the Eastman or just small differences in fit and finish? In my search through forums and reviews I can't seem to find a clear winner...

IMO, the appearance of the mouton collars on (most of) the ELC USN jackets are subpar for the cost. Everything else about the ELC will be on par with or better than the Buzz G-1. The pattern of the ELC is the better of the two as well.

Not trying to be an opportunist, but why an Eastman, when theres Goodwear or better, an original...

Eastman make good jackets for sure (owned a ton) and their G-1 and M-422A are very comfy.
But for half the money you could get the deal.

If you're after a new jacket, I get it. But then look at Goodwear, jackets on another level.
Real vintage mouton fur, not sheepskin stuff, much better knits, sturdy zippers and patterns only bested by an original.
