I think the problem may be the shape of my face and my neck. I have a square jaw with sharp angles, and a thick Adam's apple; both are tedious and difficult to get just right with the Merkur. It works fine on my face, but below the jawline, it turns my neck/chin/jaw into a veritable battle zone of small patches of hair and raised red welts.
