Seiko 5's are great AC and as you say loads of bang for your buck, pretty reliable too!

Nomos makes and decorates all their own movements, which is something you don't usually see in watches unless they cost over $10k. You can get a new one for less than $2k, and a used one for about $1000. And they've got a great vintage look. (They're small and dressy.) Here's the Orion.

I've got an Orient Deep Automatic, absolutely fine for an every day beater. Could do with a service though, as it runs a couple of minutes fast every week. What I don't like about this model is that it's not really quiet: you can hear the winding-up mechanism quite distinctly.
Longines might be another brand you can have a look at.

Seiko 5 is an excellent recommendation to Worf. A good one can be had for around $100 USD. They are the most reliable value for the dollar and are known to have an excellent reputation as an inexpensive watch with a real movement. I recall reading one or two articles where they are recommended as the best watch for the dollar. And they even look outstanding.

I agree - better than many watches 10 times the price. I prefer them to my Omega and Longines watches. A movement so simple and strong it can be fixed by any competent watchmaker but will rarely if ever break down in a lifetime even if you drop it down a staircase as I did...

Wow... what great information. I've not bought anything YET. Instead I was looking through my stuff and found 2 things I forgot I had. First, an old mid-70's I believe, clunky Seiko Automatic, and second a Secret Service watch given to my son that he, being everything cell phone, never used... AT ALL. I had the battery replaced, bought a longer strap and voila! I'll take pics when I get a chance. Thanks all for your patience and kindness.

Well, I have a Seiko 5, called "Military", if memory serves, but I'll prefer my Omegas any given day. They are nice, these Seikos, and great value for money, but by no means the pinnakle of watchmaking. Seiko also has a line called "Spirit", very nicely made and to have for 200 - 300 $ over the internet (Seiya-san is a good vendor).
But be that as it may, Worf, if you accept watches with battery , all the better. Saves you some serious money, believe me.

You might take a look at the Hamilton Khaki series. Beautiful, classic military styles for around $600-700. Sturdy and super-reliable.

Being a watch tragic, I have a few Omega's, some JLC, and even a Rolex or two. I picked up a brand new Hamilton Khaki the other month on eBay and have not taken it off.

I'm extremely impressed with it. Classic military style, swiss movement, high quality finish. You get a heck of a lot of watch for your money.
