I picked up this lovely hat at an op-shop a few months back (for the princely sum of $5.65!). It's in great nick, no moth damage or stains. The stitching holding the sweatband was falling apart, so I eventually removed the whole thing -- whether I'll put it back in or not I have yet to decide; the hat fits better without it and it's purely for costuming so doesn't get a lot of wear.
I'm very much a newbie when it comes to hats... Anyone have any idea of how old this hat is? At various points on the sweatband and on the tag under the lining it has:
Royal Silk (I assume this is the style/model)
John B Stetson Company USA - made in Australia under licence
Royal Stetson
PW Donovan Pty Ltd, 47 Murray St Hobart (local seller/distributor I assume, long gone though)
On the tag:
Stetson Royal Quality
Style: R-Silk
Period: AA
Order: 4520
Colour: Spruce
7 1/4 A, 4 1/4 T (sizes?)
