Tenjin Works vs Thedi Leathers

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience with a natural veg tan sports jacket I bought back in June 2024, my first real foray into high-end leather jackets. Unfortunately, the fit wasn’t quite right from the start.

I ordered the wrong size, plain and simple. The P2P was too generous, and the waist couldn’t be altered due to the construction. In hindsight, I should have gone down a size, especially in the shoulders and length. While those two weren’t terrible, the main issue was the chest and waist: too loose to feel good wearing it.

At first I kept telling myself it was fine, wore it about a dozen times, but deep down I knew it wasn’t working. I even tried to sell it at one point, but regretted that immediately. I hadn’t yet tried the other route: a professional alteration.

Now, I know many here are firmly in the “never alter a leather jacket” camp, and I get it. But I figured it was worth a shot, especially since I wasn’t wearing it anyway.

After buying this jacket, I also picked up an Aero Premier Highwayman and a Thedi Leathers motorcycle jacket. Both were fantastic experiences, and I was especially impressed with Thedi Leathers. So I reached out to Pampoukas Theodoros (who is roughly my size) to see if he’d be willing to try an alteration on the jacket.

To my surprise, he said yes, cautiously, and entirely at my own risk.

I’ve attached some pics showing the jacket before the alteration, during the cutting process, and the final result. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier. The p2p and waist are now spot on. The sleeves and length are still a bit long for my taste, but overall the fit is so much better, and in my eyes, the jacket has become a unique piece with its own character.

I’ll be wearing this one proudly and letting it age into that deep, rich caramel colour.

Congrats on the finished product and thank you for the pictures.
My father was a tailor and I'd seen him alter jackets for people with physical disabilities.
The change in symmetry requires not "a change or two", it requires the complete reorientation of the jacket.
Very skilled work, even for a talented garment pro.
Enjoy!

Thanks for posting the before and after pics. The current jacket looks like it’s made for you, with the nicely fitted waist! I’m curious, if I may, how much did the alteration cost you?

I’ve been contemplating ordering a Tenjin Works jacket, JW-02 model, but if I were to order it, I’d want a tag size 38 (or 40) for p2p to fit, with a sleeve length of a size 36, and a back length of a size 34. I’m usually a size 40(JP). It seems too Frankenstein of a pattern for it to be a good fit. And given that it’s natural leather, I don’t know how much it’s going to shrink after being wet or oiled. So I’m still holding back.

It looks great on you now, Theodoros is an absolute artist. I think I'm done buying jackets but, if I do buy another one, this reinforces that it would be another Thedi.

Also, IMO this showcases why very few people would take on this kind of job. It just seems too complex and too high risk to offer it on a regular basis.

It looks like a totally different jacket that you’re wearing. The fit is perfect as it drapes to your body, especially at the hem.

@floater That’s some interesting decoration you have there! Thanks for sharing your experience.

It was this video of the Y’2 natural leather HH that got me thinking of shrinkage. I also attached 2 pics taken from the video, new and worn. Both the sleeve and back lengths have shrunken by quite a lot.

That’s exactly what he said. An alteration is in fact creating a whole new pattern and a lot of work. If it is about altering the hem or p2p. Shortening the sleeves or body length is a bit easier

Excluding sending the jacket twice across Europe (70,- total) It was 150 for the altering. This was a very good price because he totally deconstructed the jacket and put it back together in a different pattern. I think he normally does not alter jackets that are not his but fortunately he was willing to make an exemption. I read sometimes that he is hard to reach but in every step of ordering a new jacket and having this one altered he always reacted within two days. And the alteration was done within two weeks.

The options Tenjin Works gives you are not custom but you can change the body and the arms. The problem for me was ordering size 46 arms and body 44. As you can see in the first pictures the problem is the hem and als p2p. The hem keeps getting bigger with bigger sizes and there is nothing you can do about this. I don’t know if I would order a jacket from Tenjin again because of this.

The jacket has not shrunk since I got it, but it’s a very soft calf hide. In the YouTube video above the guy talks about horsehide and that it can shrink. I do not know if this is the same for calf hide

Wow! What a difference the tailoring makes, and as others have commented, what a great value provided by Thedi. Looks like you have yourself a keeper!
