Has anyone else seen a sweatband like this before? The sweatband seam is in the side of the hat and not the back. The sizing is printed at the back by the bow of the laced sweatband. There aren’t any markings on the leather sweatband that indicate that it’s a Cavanagh so maybe the sweat is a latter replacement item?

I have seen such a sweat with the seam on the side on two top hats from English production (exclusively): Rare, but it seems to occur - on German-Austrian I know it, for example, not at all.

Stop it, now, you're killing me with those bowlers :)

Just talking about it, now already 2 new examples of bowlers (English bay)
- again from English production:

Obviously only with top hats and bowlers so stiff felts:
I believe these are hats meant for high society riding,
hence the cord threaded through the sweat.

This Borsalino bowler has the same feature (not mine).

I recently bought these two stingy brim Cavanagh hats. I have all the stingy brims I want, but the condition was outstanding, the size is a rare 7 3/4 Extra Long Oval, and the price was more than right. Not sure yet if I’m going to keep them, but for now I’m their caretaker.

Identical hats other than color: 5 1/2” open crown, 1 3/4” brim with, of course, a Cavanagh Edge.

Brown:

Dark gray or charcoal Cavanagh in size 7 3/8 (59cm) Long Oval with a 5 1/2” open crown and 2” brim with a Cavanagh Edge. The felt is substantial, but it’s some of the best of its kind. It readily accepts a dry crease and is a notch up from other felt of it’s era as is befitting Cavanagh. Aside from the owner’s initials, there aren’t any markings on the sweatband.

Cavanagh Thirty Five, color Newport, 1 7/8 brim. The hat's not marked as a Thirty Five, but tag gives the price. Got this the end of last year and about forgotten about it because I'll never wear it.

1933-35 Cavanagh. I've also posted it on Hat Corporation of America block sizes thread. Photos are from seller's ad. I'll post more photos when it arrives. The ad said it has a 3 inch brim but I'm skeptical til proven otherwise. I've read through this entire Cavanagh thread and didn't see any hats with a 3 inch brim, unless any were in photos that can no longer be seen.

Additional pics of my 1933-35 Cavanagh, color Park Brown. Has 2 1/4 inch brim, not 3 inch as claimed by seller. Note the sweatband is stamped with a Cavanagh Edge patent emblem which seems to be an evolution of the earlier rare "Cavanagh Make" stamp referred to by Brad Bowers aka The Hatted Professor. There were 4 paper tags in the hat and a remnant of a 5th. 2 of them are identical, the ones which say Park Brown on them. There's no Union tag. There is the NRA tag

I have the same Cavanagh stamp on my new /old Dobbs Lords hat I was able to pick up from Bob @BobHufford . This one has a very generous 6 inch crown (open).

If you read The Hatted Professor article on dating Cavanagh hats, he shows the predecessor of this design in examples of "Cavanagh Make" emblems which has a leafy border (see photo below). He said he'd only seen about 3 examples of that earlier version, which he thought only lasted til about 1930 or so. By the way, nice Dobbs. I was tempted to bid on it myself but had just bought several Homburgs including a 40's Dobbs.
