Hello everyone,

Just wanted to share another Cavanagh I picked up a few months ago. I hadn’t had the chance to take photos until now. It’s a size 7 5/8, but it fits me well (I usually wear 7 1/2).

I believe it’s post-60s, 70-80s? though it’s hard to date precisely. The felt is very soft and pleasant to the touch. I’m not sure if it’s a beaver blend ? Or something else.

If anyone has more information, feel free to share!
Thanks in advance.

Cavanagh Forty, 1944 to 1950. Has 3 inch brim and 5 1/2 inch open crown. Belonged to Brigadier General James H Stratton of the Army Corps of Engineers, who was promoted to General in 1944 and retired in 1949, it seems. The mfg tag is slightly different from other 40's tags Brad Bowers shows in his Dating Cavanagh Hats article. I bought it from Lounge member singlechange.

I tend to agree with Brad's historical assessments ... for me, the major clues are: 1) the lack of Hat Corporation of America (HCA) vintage labels; 2) the black sweatband; and 3) the appearance of the registered trademark symbol after "Cavanagh" on the sweatband. Similar to Dobbs, the latter is a dead giveaway that you are dealing with a more modern "Post-HCA" hat. Hope this helps!
