On the morning of 22 November, 1963 JFK was presented with a "cowboy hat" at a breakfast gathering in Fort Worth, TX. Much controversy has surrounded the whereabouts of this hat since the assassination. I did a little research and received a response from the "6th Floor Museum" in Dallas which I've posted here.

"Thanks for writing us about the hat presented to President Kennedy the morning of the assassination. Star-Telegram writer Bud Kennedy and I had a nice chat soon after I read that article. Contrary to what Bud had been told, the hat remained among Kennedy family and official items and they have been at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston since it opened, along with the other gifts given to them at the Fort Worth breakfast.

In fact, while the hat may have been manufactured by Peters Brothers, it was a gift of Washer Brothers, one of Fort Worth's prominent clothing stores. Mayor Raymond Buck, in making the presentation, credited only Washer Brothers, not the Peters Brothers. This Museum has, and is preserving, the original video tapes of the breakfast events."

Also posted is the Peters Bros. web page giving their side of the 'Shady Oak' story: http://www.petersbros.com/PRESIDENTS/Default.htm

Here is a link to the news footage of Kennedy receiving his 'Shady Oak': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVHGekDVRQ0&feature=PlayList&p=3AEA788DCBDE1266&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=36
